Use Your Blinker

Hey there.

I'm aspiring good human, who has SO many interests.
Some of which are music. This is what I've been playing on repeat recently
and the best describers for what “good” is IMO.

Selfish Soul

Seasons are changing. Transition times are the best moments to branch out and fill your "norm" with experiences and feelings that you might not have touched in a while or ever before. You know it when you feel it. Such as pure joy or absolute pain. When you feel it, you think this is as intense as it gets. But somehow, I wake up every day and love my partner even more than the day before. It's a re-reminder that the feelings I have in one moment are only for that moment and no others. They are to help shape the way I grow and to get ready for the change that's yet to come.

Previous Obsessions

Jessica Lea Mayfield

Standing in the Sun

An earworm for sure. This song *absolutely* belongs at the end of an indie movie, the protagonist is at the end of a long/hard journey and has to move on to a new chapter. Their car broke down in the desert the night before and are all alone. They wake up to the sun beaming in through their windshield. They get out of the car with a haggard look, stare at the horizon, and begin to walk. The camera cuts sharply to them in the desert rather than walking on the road, cuts again to them further in, then again to them climbing up a hill. Finally were at the top of the hill and their hair is gently blowing, the shots are close-ups of their face or possibly a wide angle of them at the top for a moment. We the audience, get a sense of reflection from their past and the new life they are about to embark on. Probably an abrupt black screen at the last chorus. 3-second pause, then credits. yada yada, something like that.

Pete Seeger

Which Side are You On?

People have been striking downtown for the custodial staff at RISD. Their union has been asking for a proper wage increase that's comparable to other schools in the area. They are on week two and the crowd has gotten bigger every day but it's hard not to see the passers-by who hardly glance at their efforts, including myself. I look at the group, with their drums and whistles, absolutely agreeing that everyone deserves a living wage but I keep walking by. It feels like the saying "not in my back yard". I see you protesting, I agree with you, and I want you to win, but I don't do anything to help. I justify, "It's not my fight" while fully knowing that this could happen to anyone. Anyone could be in those shoes and hope that their community will join their efforts for a fair pay increase. There's a disconnect and lack of empathy for situations strangers could be going through. Which reminds me, go donate blood. Everywhere is in short supply, it's a large contribution with fairly little effort you can do for your community.

Getting over one guy, falling in like with another. What can I say, Andy knows how to bring it..

Father John Misty

I love you, Honeybear

PAPPA JOHN! I'm surprising even myself by not adding Fear Fun instead, but I guess that's growth. I'm thoroughly impressed with how many different genres he's managed to fit into this album while keeping the whole piece cohesive. From personal experience, FJM is a top-notch choice to listen to when exploring a new location.

Saintseneca

Pillar of Na

An oldie (to me) but a goodie. I have vivid memories of finding this band on a Facebook page meant to introduce me to the people I was about to work with that fall. Many years later my partner and I both squealed as we found out we both loved them. He brought the speakers and record player up to our room. We through this album on and jumped up and down dancing to "Feverer". Not many bands I'd take off work to see, but Saintseneca if you play, I'll be there.

Everything Went Well

Eating one square of dark choclate and saying "that's perfect". Then going to bed.

Nora Brown

East Virginia

You can find a few dozen versions of the tune East Virginia, but the way Nora does it is like no other. I originally found Nora on the Radiolab series about Dolly Parton, to say I fell in love is an understatment. Oviously she has tallent, oviously she's going places. But the way she cuts through this specific tune is like instant butter melting, dripping over the counter, and creating puddles on the floor. No matter how many times I listen to this, I become that butter everytime.

Cate La Bon

Pompeii

This is not your average walk in the desert. This is a combination of 80's vampire lounge and electric cars that clean the air as they drive. The album seems to melt effortlessly from song to song, it's easy to close your eyes and just let the body feel the waves of motion roll over it. It's a reflection all on its own.

My Body

I'm the Only Little Light You'll Need - EP

Listen to the crickets, the geese, the harp, the synth, the bass. The ride these 5 songs take you on is a journey of falling down a hole and the climb back up. I find myself listening to the whole thing on loop, feeling myself fall down and get back up, noticing the resilience grow each time.

Department of the Eagles

Too Little Too Late

A those grand examples of how a cover can outshine the original. Once you make art and release it to the public it's no longer yours. It's allowed to evolve and move freely without you.
